What Does TPMS Mean?

TPMS Sensors

When it comes to the tech in your vehicle, what does TPMS mean? TPMS is short for Tire Pressure Monitoring System. It uses tire pressure sensors to track the air pressure of your tire. If it sees that one or more of your vehicle’s tires aren’t at the right pressure, the warning light on your dashboard will turn on our flash so you know it’s time to add air. Most new vehicles have TPMS, meaning you can prevent tire failure and avoid a trip to the service center. Let us enlighten you, Carrollton drivers!

Tire Pressure Monitoring System Features

The Tire Pressure Monitoring System tracks the pressure inside your tires and tells you if you’ve got too low a level in your tires. The TPMS dashboard warning light looks like a flat tire with an exclamation point or the illuminated letters TPMS. It’ll tell you if your tires are underinflated, which could cause all this:

  • Poor traction
  • Decreased load carrying capability
  • A flat tire or blowout
  • Poor fuel economy

In the short term, proper tire inflation will protect you from a potential accident. In the long run, it prevents your tires from wearing out prematurely. You’ll even optimize your fuel economy!

Proper Tire Inflation

Both over- and under-inflation of tires leads to many problems for drivers in Douglasville. If your tires are properly inflated, you’ll have the following benefits:

  • Reduce tread movement thereby increasing the life of the tire
  • Reduce rolling resistance which will increase vehicle efficiency
  • Increase water dispersion which decreases the likelihood of hydroplaning

To get a grip on what your proper tire pressure is, take a look at your owner’s manual. You’ve got a couple options for filling up your tires. These options are as follows:

  • Many gas stations have tire filling areas separate from the pump station.
  • You can take your vehicle to your favorite service center for full tire service.
  • If you need a little more air in your tires quickly, you can even use a bike pump!
